MSC St Declan’s Way Pilgrimage 24th-29th May 2026

Journey through Ireland’s ancient history on Saint Declan’s Way with MSC Missions…

This May, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart are joining forces with Celtic Ways Ireland to take our pilgrims on a spiritual journey through Ireland’s ancient history along St Declan’s Way, a 5th century pilgrim path dating back 1,500 years. Beginning at one Round Tower and ending at another, we will walk from the Rock of Cashel, Co. Tipperary, to Ardmore, Co. Waterford, taking in the enchanting sights and sounds of the Irish countryside over the course of six days.

Here at MSC Missions, our extended Sacred Heart family work in over 50 countries all over the world to empower, educate, and inspire hope in communities enduring the effects of poverty, war, and often unimaginable hardship. This fundraising pilgrimage will help our MSCs to continue to help those who need it most in today’s troubled world, while giving you the opportunity to take part in a uniquely powerful pilgrimage through Ireland’s Celtic past, making memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

“While the routine of everyday life can leave us at times feeling numb, our experience of walking a pilgrimage can open up opportunities for self-reflection and a whole new sense of awareness,” says Fr Tony Horgan MSC. This is your invitation to be part of a truly remarkable journey through Ireland’s heart and history – will you join us?

Note: We will be fundraising for the Twin Baby Unit in a hospital run by the OLSH in South Sudan and we will be asking people to raise a minimum of €500.00. This is in addition to the cost of our St Declan’s Way Pilgrimage.

MONDAY MAY 25TH – Stage 1: Rock of Cashel and Cahir – the start of the Celtic Story (14km)

  • Coach transfer from Glencomeragh House to the Rock of Cashel at 8.15am.
  • We will take a guided tour of the Rock of Cashel to set us on our way. The ‘city of kings’ was home to the high kings of Munster who ruled for centuries from the magnificent site of the Rock of Cashel.
  • It was also from here that St. Declan left on his return to Ardmore after his many meetings with St. Patrick in the 5th Century. You sense the history as you leave behind this iconic pilgrim space to make your first steps en route to Ardmore.
  • John G. O’ Dwyer, renowned author and travel writer, will join us before we leave and offer his unique insight into the path we’re about to take. There is no one better to inspire us on our way.
  • We start out from Cashel along St Declan’s Way and take our 12km through the beautiful Golden Vale. We soon leave the noise and din of the town behind and embrace the beauty of the landscape that opens up before us. Here, in this vast expanse of open countryside, we step off the beaten path and experience an Ireland that few visitors get to see. St Declan’s Way has its own way of slowing the pulse right down.
  • We relax over lunch in the ruins of an old churchyard in Lough Kent before taking our coach transfer into the historic town of Cahir. Some may want to rest for a while over a creamy pint or a cuppa after the bespoke tour of Cahir Castle that we will have arranged for you. Cahir has it’s own brand of magic. You’ll enjoy your few hours here.
  • Return to Glencomeragh in plenty of time for evening dinner at 6.30pm.

Walking in the steps of St. Declan from Cashel in Co. Tipperary to Ardmore in Co. Waterford lingers with you long after your odyssey is complete. Here on this ancient ‘Rian Bó Padraigh’ once trodden by the saints of old, we pass castles and forts, holy wells and hallowed vaults, breathtaking views and barren places – an eclectic collage of visual sensations that seep deep into the prism of the mind as we make our way.

TUESDAY MAY 26TH - Stage 2: From castle to castle - Cahir River Walk and Ardfinnan (16km)

TUESDAY MAY 26TH – Stage 2: From castle to castle – Cahir River Walk and Ardfinnan (16km)

  • We leave Glencomeragh to begin our walk from Cahir.
  • The first few kilometres along the Coronation Walk are stunning. We move to the flow of the River Suir on this stage as we leave Cahir and arrive in Ardfinnan.
  • This day we start to connect to the story of the land and the people who have shaped it. We leave the noise and the din of the towns behind and discover the wonders that await when we come off the beaten path.
  • We are joined by Conor, our local guide from Ardfinnan, who walks and talks us through the story of the place he calls home. Trust us, you’ll love Ardfinnan and Conor 🙂 Lunch will await us when we arrive. Elaine will have taken your orders in advance and your toasted wrap, homemade biscuit cake, tea/coffee and fruit will taste just great after your morning stroll.
  • We’ll do a short one hour trail out to Lady’s Abbey before our coach transfer back to Glencomeragh House. For those who would like to walk a little more, one of our guides will lead you on a 5km trail to Goatenbridge at the foot of the Comeragh Mountains.
  • Plenty of time to relax and enjoy the unique ambience of the Glencomeragh surrounds.
  • Traditional Irish fish and chips in local pub in Kilsheelan. A taste of the real Ireland.

Our trail across St. Declan’s Way gives you space to breathe, to step back a little from the world for a while and connect to source again. It is good to detox, to clear the head of all that burdens it, to find perspective. Now more than ever we all need it. It is strangely reassuring to know that whatever it is you’re going through, others before you have gone through more and persevered to the end. You sense the voyagers who trod these paths for centuries; saints, pilgrims, labourers, emigrants, rebels, visionaries… each one with a story to tell. Its stories that bring a place to life.

There are so many ruins you pass along the way, it’s good to rest awhile by the remnants of old and listen to faint murmurings from a bygone time.

WEDNESDAY MAY 27TH - Stage 3: Over the mountains to Mount Melleray Abbey (14km)

WEDNESDAY MAY 27TH – Stage 3: Over the mountains to Mount Melleray Abbey (14km)

  • We take our 8.30am transfer to the Liam Lynch Memorial in the Knockmealdown Mountains from where we start out on Day 3 of our St Declan’s Way Experience.
  • This day’s trail passes through undulating and beautifully picturesque terrain as we make our way into Mount Melleray Abbey. It takes about 6 hours to walk this trail but it’s worth every step. The panoramas that open up are simple stunning. Let’s just hope for a clear day. It’s good to have hiking boots on this day and to expect steeper gradients along the way. We’ve walked it with people of all ages from mid teens to mid eighties. We pace it so that everyone is well minded and no one is left behind.
  • For those who like to know more about the natural world, our guest guide Mark has an microscopic knowledge of the land making the trail all the more epic. Trust us, this is the Ireland few visitors get to see in all its rawness and natural beauty.
  • Dinner served that evening in Glencomeragh House at 6.30pm.
  • Some of the members of the Island of Ireland Peace Choir will join Phil and Elaine to lead a Vigil for Peace.
  • Note: A gentler walk can be arranged on this day for anyone in the group concerned about the steeper gradients. Equally, if anyone wanted to extend their walk, one of our guides can lead you along an 8m trail through the beautiful Glenshelane Woods Walk.

St. Declan’s Way leads down through the quiet surrounds of Mount Melleray. In this place, past and present merge seamlessly as one. The priests go about their daily routine unruffled by time; the lands are farmed, the cows are milked, the café reverberates to the din of the curious visitor. The school may be closed since 1974 yet you sense an energy in the calm, a resolute belief amidst the changing vagaries of an uncertain world.

THURSDAY MAY 28TH - Stage 4: Lismore to Villierstown (14km)

THURSDAY MAY 28TH – Stage 4: Lismore to Villierstown (14km)

  • As we start out from Lismore, we’ll be met by local guide, Alice, from Lismore Heritage Centre who gives us a unique insight into the story of Lismore and it people. It’s amazing to think that this place was a centre of monasticism going back over 1,000 years in the time of St Carthage.
  • We take a woodland trail into the historic town of Lismore to include a visit St Carthage’s Cathedral and to learn more about the treasured monastic story of this ancient place.
  • The walk down the riverbank as we leave Lismore is amazing. It was here along this very river that pilgrims over the century made their way to Youghal Harbour before embarking on their voyage to Galicia to walk the Camino de Santiago. The rhythm of this day is very different to all that has gone before. Setting out from the stunning backdrop of Lismore, we move to the river’s flow deeper into the story of the people who passed this very way before. There’s a peace here that words cannot describe.
  • It’s be lovely to take breaks along the way and enjoy lunch in the renowned Barron’s Bakery Cafe in Cappoquin.
  • On arrival into Villierstown, we’ll have lunch in a local cafe before walking down to the riverbank to watch the River Blackwater ‘rolling along’ on its way to Youghal. It’s the perfect space for quiet reflection and a little music.
  • That evening, we’ll take a 40 minute transfer into Dungarvan for our Gala Dinner and presentation of Certificates.

Lismore is a place that you cannot help but fall in love with as you pass through its quaint streets. It has a unique charm that makes you want to stay longer than your tiring limbs might allow. Lismore is justifiably proud of its long and distinguished history. Tracing its origins to the arrival of St Carthage in 636AD, Lismore was once a university city attended by scholars from all over Europe. The town is beautifully situated on the well wooded banks of the Blackwater. The Cathedral on the right is on the grounds of the monastic school foundations which reached the zenith of its reputation during the 8th and 9th centuries. There is nowhere quite like Lismore.

Alice O’Donoghue, from Lismore Heritage Centre, guides us down the hillside across the River Blackwater and reminds us of the mystical allure this place had for travellers through the centuries who, as they made their way to Lismore for study, no doubt landed at Youghal, the seaport of the Blackwater, and proceeded to follow a highway called the ‘Bealach Eochaille’ along the path of St. Patrick’s Cow, connecting Lismore with the interior of the country.

The Castle still beats to the pulse of times past. It retains its mystique, its mesmeric charm; its lofty walls privy to stories that remain untold. The river flows serenely below as if knowingly bowing to the many who have walked its banks before.

FRIDAY MAY 29TH - Stage 5: Arrival into Ardmore (15km)

FRIDAY MAY 29TH – Stage 5: Arrival into Ardmore (15km)

  • We’ll travel to Ardmore by car and park up by 9am before we take our coach transfer to our starting point for our final day on St Declan’s Way. We’ve saved the best ’til last.
  • Our final day’s leads us through quiet vales and wild countryside to where the sea gradually opens up before us as we arrive into Ardmore.
  • On arrival into Ardmore, we’ll have lunch by the sea before taking the cliff path from the Holy Well and Hermitage of St Declan around to the monastic ruins.
  • We gather at St. Declan’s Well to mark the moment before taking the scenic Cliff Path that leads around to the old monastic ruins. Here, by the shoreline, we sense we have arrived. It’s a place seeped in the Celtic soul of Ireland. Our local guide, James, adds even greater meaning to the story of this place on the hill. It will stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
  • Wrap up by 4pm in plenty of time for you to make your journey home.

Along St Declan’s Way, it’s not the destination that matters; it’s the steps in between. An exception could be made for Ardmore. Here, by the shoreline, it feels like we have returned to source, to the very place where St. Declan built his own monastic settlement on the hill circa 416AD. Declan retired for greater seclusion to a little cell below overlooking the Bay and the ruined Church and Holy Well still lie in quiet repose to his memory.
